Michael Walker was involved in a motorcycle accident on Coleridge Rd, near Lake Coleridge Village, on October 24.

Michael “Hooky” Walker was feared to die after being seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in mid-Canterbury.

However, he has awakened after spending nearly a month in a coma, to the relief of family and friends who hailed him as “the best news.”

Walker took his Harley-Davidson out for a quick ride before a barbecue dinner with his family on October 24. He didn’t make it home, he crashed on Coleridge Rd, near Lake Coleridge, around 6.45pm.

He suffered hemorrhages in his brain, multiple fractures of the ribs, femur and spine, and a collapsed lung.

Walker was rushed to Christchurch Hospital, where he underwent at least three surgeries and remains in the intensive care unit.

Skye McCormack said her stepfather’s latest surgery “went well” and that he woke up from his coma on Saturday.

“[He is] doing so well. You are awake and holding your own breath well. He’s trying to speak, but it’s still very tiring for him, so he’s just using [his] brows as your communication right now, ”he said.

Walker works as an engineer at Trustpower Lake Coleridge Power Station. He completed a marine engineering apprenticeship while serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy and was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1996.

Along with his wife, Jo, Walker is a volunteer for the Soldiers Airmen Seaman Association of New Zealand (SSAANZ), a community for current and former Defense Forces personnel. He is also a trustee.

A spokesperson for SSAANZ said in a Facebook post that Walker waking up from his coma was “the best news.”

“Hooky has been through the absolute wars and has been through the worst,” the publication read.

“His main surgeries [are] all done for now [and] little by little he has come out of the coma. Those of you who know Hooky will not be surprised by his first communications. His first statements have been ‘don’t sell my bike’ [and] ‘I want a mince pie.’

The spokesman said Hooky was able to recognize his family after waking up and that it was likely he would have prevented a “traumatic brain injury.”

A Givealittle page for koha (donations) has been created to help Walker’s family travel from Lake Coleridge Village to see him in Christchurch. As of Monday, just over $ 17,100 had been donated.

A police spokeswoman previously said Things Walker’s motorcycle was found by a passerby, who called emergency services.

Another spokeswoman confirmed that the police were continuing to investigate the accident.
