Debbie Ngarewa-Packer of the Maori Party and Adrian Rurawhe of the Labor Party will take the stage Monday night in the election debate of Te Tai Hauāuru of Māori TV.

On Monday, current Labor MP Adrian Rurawhe and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer of the Maori Party went head-to-head for the seat of Te Tai Hauāuru Māori in the first election debate on Maori television.

Job security is one of the most pressing issues affecting voters, as well as uncertainty about the economic future.

Rurawhe has held the position since 2014, Ngarewa-Packer, co-leader of the Maori Party and head of the iwi of South Taranaki, will contest it for the first time.

Other candidates running for the seat, who will not be present at the debate, include Advance NZ’s Noeline Apiata, One Party’s Korrallie Bailey-Taurua, NZ Outdoors Party’s Kiri McKee and New Conservative’s Joshua Morgan.

David Jones will moderate the Monday night debate on Maori television.

There are 21 iwi groups in the entire electorate, including Taranaki, Whanganui, Horowhenua, Manawatū, the Kāpiti coast, and Porirua, as well as Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Maniapoto.

Former host David Jones of Ngāti Kahungunu and Rongowhakaata will moderate the discussion.

Following the debate, journalist Rukuwai Tipene-Allen will critique the candidates’ performance with panelists Georgina Beyer, former MP and presenter Tamzyn Pue.
