ACT is on the cusp of its best election result since its first campaign 24 years ago.

Leader David Seymour will bring nine MPs for the first time to join him in Parliament.

Seymour spoke about Covid-19 and the effect it had on the economy, but cautioned: “We cannot lock ourselves in and keep borrowing to plug the cracks.”

He said New Zealand needed to grow its economy and “build a country where every New Zealander has the opportunity to own their own piece of land.”

He also spoke of the importance of freedom of expression and the rights of a person to have autonomy over their own body, in relation to the Election Law at the end of life, a bill that he presented in 2015 and that led to the referendum. of euthanasia.

“Because a free society is a beautiful society,” he said.

He said that overall, the election result, which looks like Labor will have enough seats to rule alone, was not good for the country.

Just a year ago, ACT was 1 percent. So his resurgence represents ACT’s best result since Richard Prebble led the party in 2002, winning nine seats.

Since 2014, Seymour has been the sole voice in Parliament for the right-wing party. Now he seems ready to lead a team that will represent a significant block of votes.
