Ray Jane, 87, was seen driving his lawnmower into town after his car was stolen.
An elder from Napier living alone didn’t have many transportation options after his car was stolen, so he took the lawnmower for a drive.
Local police officer Sophia Holloway ran into 87-year-old Ray Jane in early August after he was seen driving his lawnmower down the road.
Jane said Stuff He was trying to drive to the Napier Police Station to report his stolen vehicle.
“Well, I wasn’t going to walk there. So I took the mower because it was the only means of transportation I had. I drove it on the highway because it was so much smoother compared to the trail. “

Holloway stopped him on Creagh St, about 3 kilometers from his home in Maraenui.
“I was going down the road as usual and she stopped me. She says ‘what are you doing?’ So I told him that my car had been stolen and that I was going to the police station to report it. She says ‘well, you can’t take your lawnmower,’ ”Jane said.
“So she followed me in the car all the way home, and then she took me to the station to report it.”
Holloway then took Jane to the supermarket and called her insurance company, as she did not have a working phone.
He also referred Jane to Age Concern for help with transportation, as it would be sometime before he had any means of transportation.
Jane said her “something Mazda” had been stolen from under her nose while she was cooking dinner on August 11.
“I had only had it for two months. I parked it in the garage and was doing a few things with it. I decided to take a break and go inside for my tea, and when I got back it was gone.

Fourteen-year-old businessman Johnny O’Neill is frustrated that he can no longer ride his lawnmower to work after a member of the public complained.
“All the wiring on the dash is completely broken and so is the engine apparently.”
Jane said he lacked transportation, but was getting help getting him to where he needed to go. At the same time, she still liked to maintain her independence.
“I walked to the Marewa stores the other day to pay my electricity bill because it had to be done and it took me 2¼ hours each way,” he said.
A police spokesman said a 19-year-old man was charged with illegally getting into a motor vehicle and will appear in court on September 9.
