A Westpac helicopter dropped someone off at the scene between Days Bay and Sunshine Bay Sunday afternoon.
An elderly man in his 70s died and his friend swam 400 meters to shore after the boat they were in capsized near Wellington Bay.
Emergency services were unable to revive the Upper Hutt man on Sunday, shortly after 4 p.m., after the small boat the couple had been fishing in began to make water on the east side of Wellington Harbor, between Days and Sunshine Bay.
Maritime Police Unit Sgt. Richard Kennedy said the surviving man was wearing a life jacket and kicked 400 meters from shore and received medical treatment.
He said they are investigating how the other man died.

His death has been referred to the coroner.
A witness said Stuff saw emergency services personnel performing CPR on the man on the Days Bay pier.
Also in attendance were the Coast Guard, Wellington Free Ambulance and a Westpac rescue helicopter.
