An early morning 4.2 earthquake shook Wellington residents this morning.

Geonet reported the earthquake at 4.57 am, with a depth of 26 km, 5 km west of Upper Hutt.

Geonet reported it as a moderate and 7623 had said via their website that they were sorry.

They said it could have been felt in Blenheim, Eketahuna and Feilding as well.

People in the area said on Twitter that the shaking had woken them up.

One wrote: “It definitely scared us out of town people. I felt the shaking for a few seconds in the lower Hutt.”

Another said: “It’s been 3 days in a row that we’ve had a morning smoothie here in Wellington. Interesting start to 2021.”
