Police used an Eagle helicopter, a fire and emergency vehicle and their Armed Criminal Squad to detain a wanted man in central Auckland last night.

The incident began when the man, who was wanted by police on a family injury matter and was known to carry firearms, was seen driving south towards Auckland, a police spokesman said.

Police used a “coordinated” approach to detain the man, which included using an Eagle helicopter to monitor the location of the vehicle once it left an address on the North Shore around 8 p.m.

A Fire & Emergency vehicle was used “tactically” in conjunction with police vehicles to block the “high risk” man’s vehicle and stop him on Halsey Street near Victoria Street around 9:45 pm.

“Given the offender’s record with firearms, the Armed Criminal Squad helped apprehend the man.”

A witness at the scene said he saw a man receiving first aid from police while waiting for the St John ambulance.

He said there were about four armed officers at the scene with “large rifles.”
