Police said the vehicle involved went off the road and onto the train tracks.

“The vehicle has been removed from the tracks and the male occupant taken to the hospital in critical condition.”

The age of the driver has not been disclosed.

Police said an examination of the accident scene will take place and it is likely to affect traffic, particularly to the south, for some time.

The southbound lanes after Ōhinewai (Tahuna Rd) are now closed, said the Waka Kotahi NZ Transportation Agency.

Motorists in the area are told to follow instructions from emergency services on site until a detour route can be established.

The northbound lanes are still open.
