Police say they have a pretty good idea who might be responsible for an Auckland pub shooting over the weekend.
Police said a gun was fired more than once in the early hours of Sunday after a fight outside Dr. Rudi’s rooftop bar. No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
Police Engagement Area Commander Scott Gemmell told RNZ that they have been vigorously investigating the incident and executed some search warrants last night.
“Unfortunately, [the offender] It was not located last night, but investigations will continue today.
“We have a pretty good idea of the suspect … we have a pretty good idea of those who were present at the time, we are just trying to locate those people and be able to talk to them to see how they are involved.”
Gemmell said the weapon used was more of a pistol than a rifle and that most of the shots were fired into the air, with a bullet shattering the glass ceiling of the lobby area.
“Whether it’s in the air or in the direction of the people, we are very fortunate that no one was injured or killed in this case.”
He said they could not elaborate on the incident for now, but could not determine gang ties at this time.
He said it was concerning that a person felt it was necessary to carry a firearm into a public space.
“I find it really worrying, I know that members of our community who go to the city for what would be a joyous evening are subject to something like this, it is unacceptable, we want to make sure that those responsible are caught and brought to justice.
“We fully understand and acknowledge that an incident of this type is of great concern to us and our community … rest assured that we have a team of detectives working on this as we speak.”
