Downtown Harbor Bridge could be closed for weeks, commuters should work from home – NZTA

All four lanes crossing the center of Auckland’s Harbor Bridge could be closed for weeks after two trucks returned and caused structural damage.

On Friday, high winds caused the two trucks to crash, causing a major disruption for Auckland drivers, and a statement from the NZTA reveals that the disruption could continue.

“A permanent solution will be a long-term process and the four lanes along the central span of the bridge will be closed to traffic for at least several days and possibly weeks,” said senior travel manager Neil Walker.

“Congestion on the road network is inevitable as we assess the damage and necessary repairs.”

He recommended that travelers should consider working from home if they can, or taking public transportation in and out of the CBD if they can’t.

More than 170,000 vehicles cross the Auckland Harbor Bridge during the week, and the configuration of the eight lanes is changed four times a day to accommodate peak hour traffic flows.

With the four center lanes closed and only the clips open, there will be only two lanes in each direction.

“We are working to ensure that the bridge can be back in operation as soon as possible,” Walker said.
