Donald Trump’s pride and joy, his Twitter account, was hacked in October after a man successfully guessed his password, MAGA2020, Dutch prosecutors discovered.

While both the outgoing US president and Twitter have previously denied that Victor Gevers accessed his account, Gevers immediately made the hack public.

On October 22, Gevers shared what he claimed were screenshots of the inside of Trump’s account, also revealing the password he used to log in: maga2020!

“We believe that the hacker has really penetrated Trump’s Twitter account, but he has met the criteria that have been developed in case law to go free as an ethical hacker,” said the Dutch prosecutor’s office (OM).

He added that hacking was a crime in the Netherlands.

But “special circumstances, also known in practice as ‘responsible disclosure,'” could prevent prosecutors from taking action, the OM added.

Dutch prosecutors made their findings based on an investigation by the police’s specialized cyber unit called Team High-tech Crime.

“Both the hacker and the US authorities have been informed of the outcome of the investigation,” prosecutors said.

At the time of the hacking, Gevers told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant that he was motivated to show Trump’s security flaws in the run-up to the US elections.

He explained that the president’s account was not using basic security measures like two-step verification.

“I was expecting to be blocked after four unsuccessful attempts. Or at least they would ask me to provide additional information,” he said.

Gevers was one of the other hackers who claimed earlier this year that they accessed Trump’s Twitter with the password “yourefired,” his famous catchphrase from his reality series The Apprentice.
