Donald Trump has made Christmas Eve a federal holiday in the United States.
Trump signed the order on Friday (US time), which will give all federal workers a paid day off on Christmas Eve.
“All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government will be closed and their employees exempt from their duties on Thursday, December 24, 2020, the day before Christmas Day,” the order reads.
The news came as a surprise to workers who were reportedly expecting no more than half a day off.
This year’s Christmas Eve falls on Thursday.
Trump has been giving federal workers the day off for the past several years, but hadn’t made it an official holiday until now.
Certain federal departments and agencies may choose to vacate the order.
“The heads of departments and executive agencies may determine that certain offices and facilities of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for service on December 24, 2020, for reasons of national security, defense or other public necessity, “adds the order.
The move comes after Trump’s numerous statements that Democrats have been waging a “war on Christmas.”
At a rally in Georgia last Saturday, challenging two Republican senators in the runoff elections, Trump warned the public that his opponents want to erase Christmas.
“Let me start by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas. Do you remember the word?” Trump told the crowd in Georgia.
“Remember? We started five years ago and I said, ‘You’re going to say’ Christmas ‘again.’ We say it again with pride. They will try again to remove that word from the vocabulary, though.”
This is Trump’s last Christmas as president.
