A prisoner has died in Manawatū Prison.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections said an ambulance was dispatched to the prison Sunday for “a person in need of assistance.”
The prison director, Mark Cookson, confirmed that the death occurred on Sunday, September 6.
He was not being treated as a suspect. The police had attended and would notify the closest family members.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Prisoners and staff affected by the man’s death will be supported. “
All deaths in custody were referred to the coroner for investigation and the cause of death determined.
There would also be an investigation by the independent Penitentiary Inspection.
Details were limited, as the death remained under investigation and the coroner had yet to determine the cause.
Police declined to comment and referred any questions to the Department of Corrections.
