Singer-songwriter Sir Dave Dobbyn and former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe are among 54 New Zealanders named in the 2021 New Years Awards.

Dobbyn, who wrote hits like Slice of Heaven and Loyal, has been made a Fellow Knight of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to music. He was made an officer for the first time in 2003.
“I keep pinching myself… I was stunned when they told me,” he said.
“It was really overwhelming. I have to admit I broke out a bit and burst into tears. ”
Throughout his 40-year career, he received a record number of music awards and Silver Scrolls, spanning his work on nine studio albums.
Dobbyn said it was an “honor” that the community could recognize accomplishments in music in this way.
Fyfe has been named a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to business and tourism.
“This really came out of nowhere for me, and it’s exciting,” he said.
“I am a very proud New Zealander. Recognition for me is something I have never sought in my career and at times I have been a little dismissive of people who receive praise at various stages. ”
Fyfe was CEO of Air New Zealand from 2005 to 2012, and CEO of clothing company Icebreaker from 2013 to 2018. In 2018, he was appointed as an independent advisor to the Government for the drift re-entry of the Pike River.
He is currently a business advisor to the Government in the recovery of Covid-19.
Former Consumer New Zealand CEO Sue Chetwin has been named a Fellow of the New Zealand Order of Merit for consumer rights services.
During his 13 years at Consumer New Zealand, he successfully campaigned for consumer law reform, including banning unfair consumer contract terms, country of origin labeling and door knocker control.
“I am absolutely delighted. I see it more as a sign that consumer rights are important, ”Chetwin said.
Mason Durie, a professor of Maori studies and academic researcher at Massey University, has been appointed to the Order of New Zealand for his services to the country.
For more than 40 years, Durie championed transformative approaches to Maori health and championed Maori in higher education.
University of Auckland Distinguished Professor of Maori Studies and Anthropology Dame Anne Salmond has also been appointed to the Order of New Zealand for her services to the country.
Salmond served as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Equal Opportunity) at the university from 1997 to 2006. Her award-winning books focus on early Maori-European exchanges, contemporary Maori life, and European exploration of the Pacific.
Former National MP and Speaker Sir David Carter has been named a Fellow Knight of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Carter served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017 and held ministerial positions in the fourth and fifth national governments. He was first elected to Parliament in 1994.
Prominent Covid-19 public health expert Michael Baker and Covid-19 modeler Shaun Hendy have also been recognized.
Both have been named members of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Baker for his services to public health science and Hendy for his services to science.
