A high-impact collision in the front of a Hawke’s Bay store left three people seriously injured and a store owner stunned by the damage.
Three people remained in serious condition at Hawke’s Bay Hospital Wednesday afternoon after the early morning crash, at Panache Soft Furnishings in Mayfair, around 12:44 a.m.
The impact was powerful enough to destroy a window of cushions, chairs and lamps, and left one of the occupants “very trapped”, according to a spokeswoman for the New Zealand Fire and Emergencies.
Emergency services were called at the intersection of Duchess Cres and Karamu Rd North in Hastings to find a scene of massive damage.
“Everything that was in front of my store is written off,” store owner Frith Harris told Hawke’s Bay Today.
“Chairs, lights, cushions, rugs, lamps, all damaged and missing.”
The glass shards were scattered throughout the store, and it was a window repair company that alerted her to the accident at 4.30am.
“If it wasn’t for the glass boys, I would have gone to work to find that horrible mess,” he said.
“There is no way that customers can enter the store.”
Harris said the store is fully insured and that he expects to be open by Monday.
A spokeswoman for FENZ said that a person injured in the accident was trapped to the point that it took approximately 45 minutes to free them from the moment they received the first call about the accident.
A spokeswoman for the Hawke’s Bay District Board of Health said Wednesday afternoon that a woman in her 20s, a man in her 30s and a woman in her 40s were in serious condition at Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
The car narrowly avoided colliding with Advanced Cleaning Supplies Hastings, next door.
A spokeswoman for the store said staff arrived at work on a “close call.”
“The tree outside the store is demolished and the windows next to it are bricked up,” he said.
A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said two people were originally taken by ambulance to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, one in critical condition and one in serious condition.
Police said two passengers in the car were also treated for injuries at the hospital. One did not need to be admitted.
Two Hastings fire trucks, a support team and two ambulances attended the scene.
Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
About six hours earlier, a car was moving slowly with seven people inside.
Two adults and five children were lucky enough to escape with “bumps and bruises” after the vehicle rolled on a grassy area off State Highway 51 near Awatoto Tuesday night.
Emergency services were called for the accident near the Ravensdown factory in Awatoto, Napier, around 6.28 p.m.
A spokeswoman for FENZ said: “We arrived and found a car with seven patients, two adults and five children.”
The driver of the vehicle told Hawke’s Bay Today that the accident occurred in an area of grass, away from the road.
The vehicle had rolled while traveling between 20 and 25 km / h after the driver accelerated, after switching from 4WD to 2WD.
The group had gotten out of the car and was able to walk to nearby ambulances.
All the occupants of the vehicle were fine, except for some “bumps and bruises,” the driver said.
Four ambulances attended the accident. The police are investigating the cause.
At approximately 8.20 am there was a nose-to-tail crash on State Highway 2 near Poukawa, Hastings. There were no injuries.
Police said a driver was taken home as his car needed to be towed.
Less than half an hour later, at 8:41 a.m. M., A truck collided with the arms of the railroad barrier, causing concrete to obstruct the tracks on Awatoto Rd, Napier.
Police said the KiwiRail team assisted in fixing the boom of the barrier and removing debris.
Drivers were also disrupted when phone lines crossed the eastbound lane on Meeanee Rd, Napier, at 9.41 a.m.
Police said traffic was diverted and contractors were on site to fix the lines.
