The Two Ten Dairy / Superette was the site of an aggravated robbery attempt Wednesday night.

A masked young woman entered a Lower Hutt dairy and threatened her owner with a hammer before being repulsed by a fog cannon.

Tejash Modi, owner of Two Ten Dairy / Superette on Knights Rd in the Lower Hutt suburb of Waterloo, said that around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, the woman entered the store dressed all in black.

She was alone and approached Modi while pointing the hammer at him and demanding money, she said.

“I was outside filling the drinks in the cooler, she just kept asking me for money at the counter, but there was no one … [she came up] behind me with a hammer and a bag. “

Modi’s wife, who was in the dairy’s back living room and could hear what was unfolding in the store, entered the store and turned on the fog cannon machine before fleeing, she said.

The girl immediately ran away from the store, without cash, Modi said. The store was not damaged in the incident.

Fog cannons are security devices that quickly fill a room with obscuring fog, inhibiting an intruder’s vision and ability to carry out a robbery.

Neither Modi nor his wife were physically injured in the attempted robbery. Modi said the entire ordeal ended in about 30 to 40 seconds.

About six or eight years ago, a similar incident occurred when the couple was threatened with a screwdriver. That criminal was later caught by the police.

Modi provided details about the incident to officers Wednesday night. He said the girl was wearing a mask and the couple could only see her eyes. He says he wasn’t scared, as she looked young and “a little scared too”.

A police spokesman said the alleged offender left in a vehicle. The police were asking people in the area for information, but had not located it so far.

Officers at the scene had taken statements and would continue to conduct investigations for the next several days, police said.
