A Category 2 tropical cyclone is expected to strengthen off the north coast of Queensland on Thursday morning and head southeast, but models do not show it to approach New Zealand at this stage.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology predicts Tropical Cyclone Niran will have a Category 3 force at 10am (NZT) on Thursday.
The cyclone was expected to remain slow through Wednesday, then on Thursday it would begin to accelerate away from the Queensland coast in a southeasterly direction.
For now, the models showed the system passing between New Caledonia and Norfolk Island, with its remnants northeast of New Zealand on Sunday, MetService meteorologist Ashlee Parkes said.

“At the moment, all the models tend to keep it away from us.” she said.
But tropical cyclones were quite difficult to forecast and there were some significant differences between the models.
