Some New Zealanders who complete their mandatory stay in managed isolation receive a “very jovial” stay and outing thanks to the creativity of the hotel staff.

Kiwis who complete their required 14-day stay in managed isolation at Auckland’s M Social hotel receive a framed certificate and are “applauded” by the hotel staff.

General Manager Nigel Edwards said Stuff that the certificate was simply a token gift so that guests could mark the historic event for years to come, and also to provide a sense of accomplishment.

“The entire experience for the guests will be something they will remember and the certificate will facilitate the story that they can tell for generations to come. We try to make the exit memorable, the hotel and the agency team are there, I or my senior team present the certificate and applaud them ”, he said.

They came up with the idea and began handing out the quirky certificates in August.

“The response is very good and marks the end of his isolation in a very jovial way.”

Edwards said these fun certificates were a hotel initiative. All returning New Zealanders undergoing controlled isolation and quarantine also receive an official government-administered isolation assistance letter upon departure.

A spokesperson for Isolation and Managed Quarantine said MBIE provides people leaving isolation facilities with a departure letter from Air Commodore Darryn Webb thanking them for their cooperation while in isolation.

The spokesperson said they understand that some individual hotels presented guests leaving with “certificates”, but these were not from MIQ.

Edwards said that with his fun certificate, there is no cost involved as it is a free gift. If a mistake was made, then the hotel would send the certificate by courier, he said.
