The captain of the Black Caps, Kane Williamson, has revealed the birth of his first child.
Williamson and his wife Sarah Raheem welcomed a baby girl into the world, and Williamson announced the news on Instagram this afternoon.
“Delighted to welcome a beautiful girl into our family,” wrote Williamson.
The 30-year-old had revealed the impending venue after the first test against the West Indies earlier this month.
“It’s a very exciting time in anyone’s life and it certainly is in mine,” Williamson said.
Williamson missed the second Test against the West Indies to be with Raheem as the couple awaited the birth, with the Black Caps batsman flying back and forth between Wellington and Tauranga before returning to Tauranga to be with his wife before the test. .
Black Caps coach Gary Stead said at the time that the entire team supported Williamson.
“Family comes first. Kane is not the first player to miss a test match due to an impending delivery and he will not be the last,” Stead said.
“At worst, Kane misses a few games.
“As a parent, as a parent, you only get that chance once in your life to be there for the birth of your (first) child and I know it’s important to Kane too.
“At the end of the day we play cricket and other things are much more important.”
Raheem is a registered nurse who studied at the University of Bristol.
The pair have largely stayed out of the limelight away from the cricket arena, but have been a couple since at least late 2015.
Williamson was not named to the Black Caps squad to play Pakistan in the first Twenty20 tomorrow night at Eden Park, but was named to the squad for the Sunday and Tuesday matches.
The Black Caps’ next test match is Boxing Day.
