Today the first significant milestone is being completed for the ill-fated Auckland International Convention Center.

One year after the SkyCity fire, an 85-ton, 30-meter-long pedestrian bridge is being built over Hobson St.

The covered walkway will be suspended 11 m above road level and will connect the convention center’s new 303-bed Horizon Hotel with the hotel and casino on the opposite side of the street.

Gary Walker of Fletcher Construction said that reaching this stage had been a real achievement.

“I’m very happy for the team. They have worked so hard, the planning, the dedication, the sheer endurance of the team to pull up their socks, put on their boots and move on.

Walker said Hobson St should be open to traffic again Monday morning.

The Horizon Hotel will open next year and the convention center in 2023.
