New Zealand could break the blockade next week and return to alert level 3.
But don’t be in a hurry to book an appointment for a cut and color just yet.
In Australia, hairdressers have been allowed to stay open below Alert Level 3, but it appears that New Zealand salons have been told that they will not be allowed to open until we reach Level 2.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the highly anticipated details of what Level 3 will look like for New Zealand will be released tomorrow and more details on Monday.
The New Zealand Registered Hairdressers Association has sent a government document to their salons about each of the four alert levels and what they mean for the hairdressing industry.
For level 3, he said companies would have to remain closed, but online sales of items approved by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment could continue. No industry-related event of more than 100 people could go ahead.
Training providers must also remain closed. Salons and hairdressers in shopping malls that can open must stop hairdressing services but can sell products to the public.
For level 2, he said staff should minimize customer contact and work from behind as much as possible. Every second seat must be used.
Magazines should be removed, snacks should not be served, and customers may be asked to bring their own.
Staff with compromised immune systems should not be on the job and PPE should be offered to staff “if necessary.” Non-essential industrial travel must be limited.
Clients over the age of 70 or those with compromised immune systems should not be at work and all clients must have their name and contact details taken.
Blaze hairdressers at Newmarket have emailed customers to tell them that by the end of next week, they would start contacting them to arrange their next appointment.
“Hopefully we have a clearer idea of next week when we can catch up with you in the classroom again soon!
“We are currently informed that we can reopen when the country is at level 2.”
They said things can look a little different when they are reopened, with new distancing requirements and no magazines.
A Blaze spokeswoman told the Herald that, according to the document, they could open at level 2.
“This could change with Monday’s announcement, but at this stage, currently level 2 would allow us to open.”
As part of the social distancing measures announced on March 24, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said nail salons, tanning, waxing, and most other beauty services would be closed. But beauty salons may remain open with a 30 minute time restriction per customer.
But after much criticism, the time limit was relaxed. Classrooms can function if they maintain one person for every four square meters.
