A 22-year-old woman was charged after allegedly escaping from a managed isolation facility in Auckland.

Police say he escaped from the Grand Millennium Hotel in the CBD through an emergency exit and wandered the city for about two hours.

But no one knew until he tried to escape again the next night.

She was also allegedly involved in another incident at the facility on Tuesday. Police have not released any further details on that incident.

National leader Judith Collins reacts to news that only a fraction of MIQ stays have been paid for.

An earlier statement from Air Commodore Darryn Webb, head of managed isolation and quarantine, said security at the scene detained the woman attempting to escape through an emergency exit around 1 a.m. on October 9.

Police spoke with the woman who revealed that she had escaped the night before. She had left the hotel, in Auckland’s CBD, around 1.07am and returned around 3.09am, the statement said.

The woman, who had arrived from Dubai on October 7, was caught on CCTV walking through the city center.

The woman was able to escape because security guards who were normally posted near the fire exit were elsewhere on Oct. 7, Webb previously said.

That was due to a “local decision,” he said.

Emergency exits that cannot be monitored by CCTV or are not alarmed are typically monitored by security guards posted near them, he said.

The woman will appear in Auckland District Court on Wednesday afternoon.
