The container ship Sofrana Surville, where a marine electronics engineer from Auckland is believed to have contracted Covid-19.

Two crew members aboard the ship at the center of an Auckland harbor worker infection tested positive for Covid-19, while a third showed a historical infection.

All 19 crew members aboard the ship docked off the Queensland coast were evaluated. The Health Ministry previously suspected that the ship was the source of infection for the Auckland worker.

Three crew members on board tested positive for the virus, however serological tests show that one is a historical infection that has recovered.

The second crew member had a weak positive PCR test and a positive serology test, indicating that they were at the end of a recent infection. The third person on board to test positive is believed to be in the middle or late stage of infection, the ministry said.

There are 25 new cases of Covid-19: 23 of them are imported, two are linked to the port worker.

Initial genome sequencing showed that the Auckland Harbor Worker virus strain had never been registered in New Zealand. The three positive cases will be sequenced to determine if they are the original source of infection.

The ship traveled from Papua New Guinea to the Solomon Islands and Brisbane, before arriving in Tauranga and moving to Auckland.

The dock worker, a marine electronics technician, carried out maintenance work on the ship on October 12 and 13. He wore personal protective equipment (PPE) while on board.

After leaving New Zealand, the ship picked up eight new crew members from the Philippines on October 13 before traveling to Noumea and Australia.

Genome sequencing showed that the man had a strain of the virus that had not previously been found in New Zealand.

Australian Health Minister Steven Miles said the New Zealand government requested genomic sequencing of the cases of the two crew members to determine if the cases were related to the new strain. The Australian reported.

The two cases have not been added to the number of Queensland cases as they have not yet reached Australian soil.

“There is a meeting underway to determine if they will be evacuated to [Australian] dry land and what hospital it will be, “said Miles.
