Comes the first day of mandatory masks on public transport through Auckland.

Auckland Transport said more than 90 percent of commuters at the Britomart hub complied with the new rules.

Anyone caught breaching the government’s masking order, which was issued Monday and went into effect Thursday morning, faces a maximum fine of $ 4,000 or a prison term of up to six months.

Masks are now mandatory on airplanes across the country as well.

At Britomart train station on Thursday morning, most people were abiding by the mandatory mask rule.

At Britomart train station on Thursday morning, most people were abiding by the mandatory mask rule.

Children under the age of 12 are exempt, as are those riding school buses.

People with medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask or covering their face safely or comfortably, including people with asthma or a disability, are also exempt.

It also comes as Samoa’s first coronavirus case flew on a repatriation flight from Auckland last Friday.

The man, a sailor, arrived in Apia on the flight last Friday and tested positive in a quarantine facility four days later.

It was unclear whether the sailor had spent time in Auckland before boarding the flight to Samoa, or whether he used Auckland airport as a transit point.

The ministry said it had seen a large number of recoveries from the virus this week, meaning there were only 37 active cases.

Twenty-nine people had recovered.

The total number of New Zealand cases was 1,654.

Labs had processed 8,665 coronavirus tests on Wednesday, bringing the total number to date to 1,208,091.

On Wednesday, three cases of coronavirus were detected in controlled isolation.
