Maynard James Keenan was symptomatic and performed in Auckland, before testing positive for Covid-19.
Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan says he could have been New Zealand’s first “super spreader” after admitting he performed in Auckland just days before testing positive for Covid-19.
The American rocker revealed, in an episode of Joe Rogan’s experience podcast, which began to feel bad while in Australia before its February shows in New Zealand.
Keenan explained how a Kiwi doctor misdiagnosed him upon arrival and exempted the 56-year-old from having the disease.
And he said he was still dealing with the effects of Covid-19 today.

“I was in Australia, we went out to dinner and immediately, the food didn’t taste good, I didn’t feel good,” Keenan said.
“We didn’t know at the time that these are the things you are looking for.
“If I had known how bad it could have been, I would have been freaking out.”
He spent four days in a New Zealand hotel before concerts at Spark Arena “just trying to get through.”
In that time he tried to drink “a lot of water” and did “a good job of isolating himself.”
Keenan said he also saw a doctor from New Zealand, but was told he did not have Covid-19 because he did not have a fever.
“I asked the doctor, do you think this could be Covid? And he said ‘did you have a fever?’ – ‘I don’t remember if I had a fever’ … ‘then you don’t have Covid’ “.
The concerts went ahead, with rave reviews, but Keenan said it was a struggle.
“The singing was harsh. We had to adjust the set a bit, don’t put the difficult ones. “
Keenan also said that he did kick-boxing training before leaving New Zealand, bound for Hawaii, where he was officially diagnosed with Covid-19 a few days later.
The 56-year-old believed he was still suffering from lung damage, months after his recovery.
“Every other day I have a coughing fit for 10 minutes, coughing up things, so I still have lung damage,” he said.
Today there were 11 new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand, all in isolation.
New Zealand’s total number of active cases is now 74 and its total number of confirmed cases is 1,578.
