A second worker at an isolation facility in Christchurch tested positive for Covid-19.

A second worker at the Sudima Hotel isolation facility in Christchurch tested positive for Covid-19, the Health Ministry confirmed.

They are a close contact at the workplace of the original new case reported Monday.

They came into contact with sailors from Russia and Ukraine, including some of the 31 positive cases who have stayed at the hotel exclusively.

The staff member was tested during routine tests at the facility and tested negative Thursday. They were then identified as a close contact at the workplace in Monday’s case and were retested. They returned a positive result Tuesday and are asymptomatic.

They are isolated at home, but will be transferred to a managed isolation facility.

The ministry believes that there are two domestic contacts, both are being evaluated and are self-isolating.

More details about this case will be announced in Wednesday’s Covid-19 update.

More to come.
