A student at Rangitoto College on Auckland’s North Shore has been identified as a family contact of someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

The student was not considered a close contact, yet his entire family had self-isolated, according to a letter sent to parents from the Auckland Regional Public Health Service on Thursday.

“They have had minimal exposure to the person while this person was contagious,” she said, since they had only been in school for “a very short time” before their family member got sick.

It comes after two colleagues of an Auckland harbor worker who has the virus contracted the disease.

The man, New Zealand’s first community coronavirus case in more than three weeks, was confirmed to have tested positive on Sunday.

His two colleagues were confirmed as positive Covid-19 cases on Wednesday.

The student has not developed any symptoms and has tested negative for Covid-19.

It is unlikely that the student was infected with coronavirus while at school.

“All school events can go according to plan,” the letter said.

It stated that parents should not send their children to school if they or a parent is unwell.

“If you know the identity of the student or family, please do not reveal their names or details to anyone else and discourage your children from speculating or identifying them on social media.

“This can lead to online harassment and abuse.”
