In a statement today, the Health Ministry said the death has not been included among official Covid-related deaths “at this stage.”

The ministry said the patient was transferred from a managed isolation facility to hospital-level care for the treatment of a serious non-Covid condition earlier this month, and then tested positive.

The Ministry said the patient spoke with the family on a daily basis, either by zoom or by phone.

“On behalf of New Zealanders, I want to acknowledge the loss of this family,” said Chief Health Officer Dr. Ashley Bloomfield.

“This is a time for all of us to express our deepest condolences, while respecting the privacy of the family.”

Two new cases of coronavirus in controlled isolation were also reported today. Both arrived from India via the United Arab Emirates on February 9.

A previously reported case has recovered and the total number of active cases in New Zealand is now 45. The total number of confirmed cases is 1972.

Yesterday two new cases of Covid-19 were reported in controlled isolation in New Zealand. Meanwhile, across Tasmania, Victorian authorities are bracing for more cases as the five-day lockdown continues today.
