More than 50,000 vehicles have been stopped at Auckland’s border checkpoints since the city was again blocked due to the latest community outbreak.

More than 800 of the stopped motorists were turned away, most of them on the southern border of the region.

Checkpoints were established starting at 6 a.m. Sunday after Auckland went to alert level 3, and the rest of the country was placed at alert level 2.

It came after a new community case of Covid-19 was announced in South Auckland, a 21-year-old who had visited various locations, including a gym and the Manukau Institute of Technology campus, while infectious.

Inspector John Thornley, Tāmaki Makaurau’s road police manager, said on Wednesday that police were pleased with the motorist’s cooperation and compliance at the 10 established checkpoints in Auckland.

“Our latest figures show that 54,633 vehicles have been stopped at border checkpoints between 6 am on Sunday, February 28, and 3.30 pm on Tuesday, March 2,” Thornley said.

The checkpoints have processed 54,633 vehicles since 6 a.m. Sunday.

The checkpoints have processed 54,633 vehicles since 6 a.m. Sunday.

During that time, 822 vehicles have been rejected, 240 at the northern checkpoints and 582 at the southern checkpoints.

There are now minimal delays to get to Auckland, Thornley said, after numerous people spent hours stuck in queues trying to get back to the city on Sunday morning.

“We would like to remind the public that they must have the correct documentation, or an approved exemption, if they intend to go through these checkpoints,” Thornley said.

The police continue to follow up on reports of violations of Level 3 restrictions in Auckland and Level 2 restrictions in the rest of the country.

Auckland residents will also continue to see patrols across the region as part of the ongoing police response, Thornley said.
