There are 10 new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand, all in isolation.

The update is the first since new rules were introduced requiring pre-departure testing for arrivals from the US and UK.

One of the cases is historical and is not considered infectious. That person arrived from Pakistan in September and returned two negative tests while in controlled isolation.

They were recently retested as a travel prerequisite and tested weak positive, indicating a historical infection.

New border rules went into effect on Saturday requiring travelers from the US and UK to have a negative pre-departure test.

Both the US and the UK are experiencing unprecedented spikes in Covid-19, with the death toll around the world reaching the grim milestone of 2 million.

Customs reported very high compliance with the new rules over the weekend, the Health Ministry said.

The rule requiring a pre-departure test will be implemented in the coming weeks. Only travelers from Australia, Antarctica and some Pacific islands will be exempt.

Starting Monday, new additional requirements will mean that people arriving in New Zealand will have to take an additional test within 24 hours of landing. The existing tests on day 3 and day 12 will continue as normal.

In the latest Covid-19 update on Friday, 18 new cases were reported.

On Friday, 3,325 tests were processed and on Saturday 3,488 tests were processed.
