All Covid-19 patients in the community have now recovered, says the Health Ministry.
No active community cases – welcome news as Auckland prepares to move to alert level 1 tonight.
There are three new cases of Covid-19 today in managed isolation.
The first two cases reported today arrived from Ethiopia via Dubai on September 23. They have been in controlled isolation at the Ibis in Hamilton and tested positive for routine tests around day 12 of their stay.
The third case reported today arrived from Dubai on September 29. They have been kept in controlled isolation at the Four Points Hotel and transferred to the Auckland quarantine facility after obtaining a positive result.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said zero active cases in the community was “another milestone” for New Zealand.
“I think we’ve been through enough to recognize that we will go through different periods during this pandemic. It is good to recognize that.”
Health Minister Chris Hipkins said the absence of active cases in the community was a “huge milestone.”
“New Zealanders have once again crushed the virus through their collective actions. The systems that have been developed and strengthened since our first wave of Covid-19 have worked very effectively to hunt down, isolate and eliminate the virus,” he said Hipkins. .
“This is very good news, but as always, we cannot sit back. Constant vigilance and teamwork, with everyone doing their part to make sure we are aware of the virus, should be our new normal for some time.”
Since August 11, 186 community cases of Covid-19 have been reported: 179 people linked to the Auckland August group, six people linked to the Christchurch returnee group and the worker at the managed isolation facility in Rydges.
“The scale and speed of the response ensured that the virus was not allowed to spread unimpeded as people worked around the clock to quickly identify and isolate cases emerging in our communities, and then track and test his contacts, “said Chris Hipkins.
There are 37 active cases in New Zealand, all of which are imported.
“The August Auckland cluster will be officially closed when there are no new cases for two incubation periods since all cases were completely isolated,” says the Health Ministry.
One person remains in a Middlemore hospital ward with Covid-19.
Yesterday’s cases
Yesterday there were three new cases in managed isolation.
The first reported case arrived from India on September 26 and was retested after giving a negative result on their routine test around day 3 of their time in controlled isolation because they were a contact for a previously reported case.
The second case reported yesterday arrived on October 2 from England via Qatar and Australia and was tested after they developed symptoms.
The third case reported yesterday arrived on October 4 from India via England and Qatar and was tested upon arrival because they developed symptoms on the flight.
Auckland Level 1 Movement
Auckland will move to alert level 1 at 11:59 pm tonight.
That means there are no limits to gatherings and the removal of social distancing requirements at restaurants and bars.
Masks are not required on public transportation at alert level 1, but Ardern urged people to remain vigilant, washing their hands, staying home if they are sick, scanning QR codes and getting tested if they even feel a little sick.
What led to the Prime Minister’s decision on the march
The cabinet met via Zoom on Monday to review Auckland’s alert level.
The Auckland group was the largest in New Zealand, but all indications were that it was under control, Labor leader Jacinda Ardern said.
There had been no new cases in the group for 10 days and only one case in the last two weeks.
Only five people from the cluster have yet to recover from Covid-19.
There was now a 95% chance that the cluster had been removed, according to a new model by Te Pūnaha Matahini.
