Covid 19 coronavirus: the world reacts to President Trump’s positive virus diagnosis

US President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, tested positive for coronavirus.

On Twitter this afternoon, just before 1 a.m. local time for the president, Trump confirmed that he and his wife were in isolation at the White House.

“We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through it TOGETHER!” he wrote.

Trump is believed to have contracted the virus from Hope Hicks, one of his closest advisers who traveled with him on Air Force One since the presidential debate on Wednesday and his rally in Minnesota yesterday.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the diagnosis of the president, who has long been accused of not taking the coronavirus seriously.

A handful of world leaders have already reached out to the president.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the Trumps a “speedy recovery.”

During Wednesday’s presidential debate, Trump was asked if he believed in the efficacy of masks, a question he used to poke fun at his opponent, Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

“I wear masks when necessary. I don’t wear masks like him,” Trump said, pointing at Biden.

“Every time you see him, he has a mask on. He could be talking 200 feet away and he appears with the largest mask I have ever seen.”

That sarcastic comment was quickly accepted by Twitter after the president tested positive.

Others simply wished the president a speedy recovery, with one calling Trump’s diagnosis a “nightmare” and “total failure” on the part of the White House team.

Trump, 74, is at high risk of developing severe coronavirus symptoms because of his age.

Melania, who is 24 years younger than the president and not as high-risk, said she and her husband “felt good.”

And of course, there were plenty of bleach-related reactions after the president seemed to suggest a while ago that injecting the toxic chemical could have an effect on the coronavirus.

Even the Australian telecommunications company Telstra decided to intervene, making a joke about 5G after conspiracy theorists claimed the coronavirus was spread by telecommunications towers transmitting 5G.
