Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has launched a strange spiel about the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, suggesting that unknown side effects could include turning people into alligators.
The far-right leader’s spiel, which has since gone viral, comes after he called Covid-19 a “little flu.”
This week, Bolsonaro insisted that he will not receive the vaccine.
“In the Pfizer contract it is very clear: ‘we are not responsible for any side effects.’ If you become an alligator, it is your problem,” the president of Brazil said Thursday.
“If you become superhuman, if a woman begins to grow a beard or if a man starts talking in an effeminate voice, they will have nothing to do with it,” he added.
The vaccine is currently undergoing testing in Brazil and is already being used in the US and UK.
Brazil launched its vaccination campaign against Covid this week.
While Bolsonaro said the vaccine would not be mandatory, the country’s Supreme Court ruled differently on Thursday, saying the vaccine will be mandatory, although people cannot be “forced” to take it.
The court ruling means authorities can fine those who do not get vaccinated and can also be banned from certain public spaces.
“It will be available to all who want it. But me, I will not get vaccinated,” Bolsonaro said about the vaccine.
“Some people say I’m setting a bad example. But to the assholes, to the idiots who say this, I tell them that I already caught the virus, I have the antibodies, so why get vaccinated?”
Brazil has had more than 7.1 million coronavirus cases and nearly 185,000 deaths.
The country is currently battling a second wave of the pandemic.
In another sentence that no one expected to write or read in 2020, a clarification is needed after the statement by the Brazilian president: the Covid-19 vaccine will not turn anyone into an alligator.
