US President Donald Trump’s personal physician issued a statement after 74-year-old Melania Trump and the first lady tested positive for Covid-19.

In a memo to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Friday, President Sean Conley’s doctor said he had “permission” to release the following information.

“Tonight I received confirmation that both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” he said.

“The president and the first lady are doing well at the moment, and they plan to stay at home inside the White House during their convalescence.”

“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch and I appreciate the support provided by some of the best medical professionals and institutions in our country.

“Please be assured that I hope the President will continue to serve without interruption while he recovers, and I will keep you informed of any future developments.”

Dr. Conley, who became the President’s physician in May 2018, is a veteran of the US Navy and is qualified in osteopathic medicine.

Following a physical examination in February 2019, Conley said the president was in “very good health” and should remain so “for the remainder of his presidency and beyond.”

Trump turned 74 in June.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that older adults have the highest risk of contracting Covid-19.

Eight out of 10 reported Covid-19 deaths in the US have been in adults 65 and older.

The first presidential debate took place Tuesday between Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden in Cleveland, Ohio.

The president traveled on Air Force One to and from the debate with political adviser Hope Hicks, who contracted the infectious disease, prompting the Trumps to get tested.
