One man’s lax hygiene habits have been exposed to the world after his son wrote to the Prime Minister to tell him that he was not “washing his hands properly.”

Jacinda Ardern shared a letter from a young fan, saying she found it when she was reviewing her correspondence.

“Jacinda,” the note began. “My dad doesn’t wash his hands properly. He doesn’t put soap on his hands or rub for twenty seconds. I’ll work on this with him.”

Ardern said she “loved the offer of support” and the post quickly attracted comments from around the world.

“Children don’t miss a thing and they will embarrass you,” wrote one person.

“Consider that you are being officially scolded and now the ‘True Director’ knows it,” joked another.

Following Ardern’s recent call on New Zealanders to instruct their family members and colleagues to do better when they don’t follow the rules, some saw the letter as proof that “even our children have become drug traffickers.”

“How you have influenced a generation of panicky traders,” read one comment.

“This is a very sad message. Think about the fear you put in the children’s minds. They will be afraid of everything.”

Many joked that the wandering father would surely improve his game and some hinted that he might have more to work on.

“That kid’s mom is sitting like ‘Now tell him you left his wet towel on the floor,'” one user joked.

The release of the sweet note comes after a 12-year-old Irish schoolgirl was shocked to receive a response to a personal letter she wrote to Ardern.

The girl received a school project during Ireland’s first blockade in 2020, in which she was asked to write a letter to a leader of her choice.

In March 2020, the now 12-year-old decided to write to Jacinda Ardern.

This week, Ardern replied.

Her father, Philip Bromwell, a journalist for the Irish RTE website, took to Twitter to share Ardern’s letter.

The letter, which is signed by Ardern, reads: “Thank you very much for your letter. I am so sorry that it took you a while to reply, unfortunately it has been a very busy few months.

“I appreciate that you took the time to write, your kind words meant a lot and really made my day.

“I hope you and your family stay safe in Ireland, please convey my best wishes.”

It was also personally signed with a ballpoint pen, with the Prime Minister adding “Thanks again, Lily!”

Bromwell said that Lily was “delighted” with the answer.

In case you are wondering if you are washing your hands properly, the Ministry of Health recommends that you:

• Wet your hands with clean running water. Use lukewarm water if available.
• Put soap on your hands and wash for 20 seconds. Liquid soap is best.
• Rub your hands together until the soap bubbles.
• Rub on both sides of both hands …
• and between fingers and thumbs …
• and go round and round with both hands.
• Rinse off all soap under clean running water. Use lukewarm water if available.
• Dry your hands completely for 20 seconds. It’s best to use a paper towel (or, if you’re at home, a clean, dry towel).
