It is suspected that a member of the crew of a ship docked in the port of Tauranga had already been infected with Covid-19.
The Ministry of Health investigates the case in the IVS Merlion after the crew member tested weak positive, with a high CT value, indicating an old infection.
The ship arrived in New Zealand waters on October 15 after setting sail from Indonesia on September 24.
The ministry said the person was most likely infected some time ago but is no longer contagious. They are now isolated as a precautionary measure and have had the Covid-19 test repeated, as well as a blood test to confirm if their case is historical.
All other crew members tested negative and have been on board the ship for three weeks, the ministry said.
The crew has also not disembarked, so the risk of transmission was very low, the ministry said.
All members of the crew are being treated as close contacts and none can leave ship until the investigation is complete.
The medical personnel and the rest of the port personnel, who had minimal contact with the crew, have been informed.
