Two people have appeared in court accused of killing a Christchurch man in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The couple, a 24-year-old man and woman, have been jointly charged, along with “unknown persons”, with the murder of Kane Alan Wayman (46) yesterday.

Detectives say they are investigating whether others were also involved.

The accused man has been identified in the indictment documents in court as a pawn. The woman is from Christchurch.

This morning in Christchurch District Court, the defendants, who appeared separately, were granted provisional name removal.

Judge Jane McMeeken placed them in pretrial detention without a guilty plea to appear in Christchurch Superior Court on February 4.

No requests for bail were presented.

Last night it was revealed that armed police had raided the headquarters of a South Island gang in connection with the death.

Investigators were searching Mongols MC’s property near Burnham on State Highway 1, south of Christchurch.

Late yesterday morning, several officers were seen outside the emergency department at Christchurch Hospital on Riccarton Ave.

They were supervising a white Mercedes car without license plates.

“This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with Mr. Wayman’s family,” police said today.

Examinations of the scene were still ongoing, police said, and would continue in the coming days.

The authorities urged all those who have not yet submitted information that could help with the investigation to do so immediately.
