A large group of people have gathered in Auckland for a gang member tangihanga, despite alert level 2 restrictions prohibiting it.

The meeting took place on Busing Ave in Papakura on Tuesday.

In live videos posted on social media, more than 100 people could be seen on the street, with Mongrel Mob and Black Power gang patches.

None of the attendees appeared to be wearing masks.

Inspector Dave Glossop, Manukau South Counties Area Commander, said police were aware of a tangihanga being performed for a member of the mixed-race mafia in Papakura.

“We have received several calls for service at the address in the last 24 hours, yet no one has been arrested.”

”Police personnel are in regular contact with people in management and continue to remind them of the Alert Level 2 restrictions currently in place in Auckland.

“We recognize that the significant number of gang members will be alarming to community members and we encourage anyone in a situation where they feel unsafe to contact the police immediately at 111.”

The situation was being actively monitored, Glossop said, and an “educational approach” was being used with those at home.

There are currently restrictions of 50 people allowed at funerals and tangihanga in Auckland as cases of community transmission of Covid-19 continue.

There are 83 active cases of Covid-19 remaining in New Zealand, of which 55 are community cases.

Four people are in the hospital and two of them are in the ICU.
