Coronavirus: Sam Morgan disconnects CovidCard, affirms that the Ministry of Health does not take it seriously

Morgan’s recall message to his team comes just before two trials of the technology were launched, one in the Rotorua community and another at an unnamed managed isolation facility.

Megan Woods, the minister in charge of Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ), says Morgan’s withdrawal would have no effect on the latest trial.

“We are working to determine where that trial will be,” he told the media from a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

“We have a couple of contenders for isolation facilities where it will be useful as a tool to trace contacts within a facility, but that’s quite separate from the Rotorua test.”

Morgan had previously explained that his decision to leave the CovidCard project came after being frustrated with the Ministry of Health.

“The CovidCard team, the people from the private sector, have pulled out of any involvement because we don’t see any path to success in the way it is being done,” he told NZME.

“There is no capacity or commitment within the Ministry of Health to do so … In fact, there is active resistance and it has been since we began.”
