Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has become the highest-ranking Vatican official known to have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Vatican said on Friday that Tagle, 63, a Filipino who heads the Vatican’s missionary arm, had tested positive when he arrived in Manila on Thursday.

The number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases in France rose by 9,406 in the past 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry said on Friday, to a total of 363,350.
The number of deaths from COVID-19 also increased by 40 in the last 24 hours, to reach a total of 30,893 victims.

Spain reported 4,708 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours on Friday, bringing its cumulative total to 566,326, the highest in Western Europe.

Switzerland has reported 528 new cases of coronavirus, the Federal Office of Public Health said on Friday, the largest daily increase in infections since early April.

Thai health authorities confirmed on Friday that another coronavirus infection had been detected in the country, in an Uzbek professional soccer player, eight days after the virus reappeared after an absence of more than three months.
The man tested positive after a mandatory pre-game test on Tuesday, despite completing the quarantine on Aug. 27 after three previous negative tests, health officials said at a news conference.
It had been more than 100 days without a domestic infection until a mysterious case appeared in Bangkok last week, with no travel history or known exposure to the virus.
