Coronavirus: Health Ministry denies deceiving Kiwis after COVID-19 hospital case number was higher than reported

A Waitemata DHB employee says in her mind that the Ministry’s reports on the data have been misleading. She says that what is said publicly is not really reality in terms of the number of COVID patients in hospitals across the country.

Since Newshub pointed out that the figures did not add up, the Ministry changed its language.

Dr. Bloomfield says the Ministry has not been misleading, but some people from nursing homes who have COVID-19 are in the hospital because the facilities they were in had staffing problems.

“We have not counted them in our number of people requiring hospital care,” said Dr. Bloomfield. “We are happy to make that clear on the website.”

To clarify, the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients staying in our hospitals tonight is five, not just two, as reported by the Ministry of Health.

On Tuesday night, the Health Ministry sent an email to Newshub after we pointed out discrepancies in the way they had reported the cases.

“You asked today about our report on inpatients with COVID-19 linked to St Margaret’s, and Dr. Bloomfield agreed to change the way this was reported on the Ministry’s website,” a spokesperson told Newshub.

“This has now changed.”
