“This is sadly the reality of any reservation system, where in the short term there is greater demand than supply of spaces,” he told reporters.
“But we cannot just activate more sites. Each new facility requires additional health personnel, additional military personnel, police, and security presence. Our borders remain our first line of defense during this pandemic, and it is important that we manage those facilities and the return of New Zealanders safely. “
It is mandatory for returning New Zealanders to secure their place in the Managed Isolation Assignment System (MIAS). Anyone arriving in the country has to show a voucher to the airlines to board their flight from their country of origin or have a special exemption from using the system.
Ardern said the reservation system holds places for a short time while the person goes and books an actual flight, which means rooms are booked and then released frequently.
“For example, in a single day in December, there were more than 300 coupons returned to the system for this reason. This new release ensures that these rooms are not wasted,” he said.
“So if you have a coupon that you are not going to use, that you have reserved a space but have found an alternative reservation on a flight or have changed your mind, be sure to cancel your reservation as soon as possible so that someone else can use that space. “
