Well-known Northland doctor Lance O’Sullivan, who previously chided Kaitaia locals for violating the Level 4 Alert Block, has admitted a violation of his own.
In a video O’Sullivan posted on Facebook, he repeatedly calls himself a “jerk” for kayaking over the weekend.
“We have been living in a campervan doing our work for the Kaitaia community, but over the weekend I went kayaking to a place not far from where I am staying,” he said.
“I’m a jerk and I … fucked. F … what a silly bastard, huh? A silly b …….”

Kayaking, like most other water-based activities, is not allowed at Alert Levels 3 or 4 because there is an increased risk of the spread of the coronavirus if participants require search and rescue services.
In the video, O’Sullivan, who was named New Zealander of the year in 2014, acknowledges the irony of violating the blockade just two weeks after calling others on social media.
O’Sullivan was previously filmed on the main street in Kaitaia, Northland, showing how many cars were on the roads.
He called the confinement in Kaitaia a “joke” and urged everyone to stay home.
While O’Sullivan admitted that he had been a hypocrite, he said that we would continue to point out problems in the community when he saw them.
“To be fair, I am human: I have made many, many mistakes in my life and I will make many, many more. Should I avoid standing and saying when I see things that are wrong? No,” he said.
“I will keep doing it, and when I make mistakes, I will tell you.”
On Wednesday, there were six new cases of Covid-19 and one death announced.
The death was of a woman in her 80s who had been linked to the Rosewood Nursing Home Group in Christchurch. New Zealand’s death toll is now 14.
