The owner of an apartment in Auckland is giving up his property to people during the coronavirus blockade.

Robert Murphy manages the Auckland central building and said he had counted five groups of guests coming and going since the closure began.

The past three nights they had seen three different people stay one night each, he said.

“I met someone outside the building who said they stayed overnight because ‘they needed an evening away from home,'” he said.

Murphy said he was frustrated and concerned about the safety of residents: “We go through disinfection every day, but we have random people that go through the night.”

He had reported non-compliance with the blocking rules to police number 105 and was aware of five residents who had also complained.

A police spokeswoman said allegations of level 4 alert violations would be examined when possible, but was unable to provide details related to this address.

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said she was furious that her safety was being compromised.

“The whole country, the whole world, is trying to stop this and this guy is organizing a vacation camp.”

The laundry is communal, so residents, including some with compromised immunity, would likely have to share it with guests in the short term.

“The last thing we need is for disaster tourists to come in for a few days and leave, sharing facilities with people who are locked up.”

“I don’t know who I’m madder at: people who would come to stay or people who would make money from that stupidity.”

Short-term leases were against building rules, but the apartment owner had long ignored it, Murphy said.

The owner of the apartment does not live in the building, but leaves it on sites like Booking.com.

The Booking.com list boasts of a “beautifully decorated, spacious and comfortable apartment” with two bedrooms and a living room.

The list does not mention any precautions around Covid-19 or leaving the apartment during closing.

The apartment is available next week, with a two-night stay that costs $ 330.
