Coronavirus: Australian Prime Minister open to New Zealanders visiting parts of Australia

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is rethinking the idea of the trip through Tasmania.

The state of Western Australia has ruled out interstate travel before 2021, but Morrison seemed optimistic, after a call on Friday with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, that more travel could occur between the two countries.

In a post-cabinet press conference on Friday, Morrison said that if there are no known cases of Covid-19 in a city or state, traffic between those areas should be acceptable.

And Morrison said he told Ardern that “Australia will seek to apply the same hotspot approach in New Zealand.”

Morrison was reluctant to describe what he had in mind as a bubble. He suggested that it could be a situation where New Zealanders could travel to parts of Australia, but Australians were unable to travel to cross the Tasman.

Morrison explained that, “if there is no Covid in Christchurch and there is no Covid in Queensland, then there is no reason why they both cannot come to Sydney.”

According to Morrison, around 4,000 Australians were returning to the country each week and these measures would allow for an easier return.

The Australian Prime Minister repeatedly stressed that New Zealand would have to make the call on how its borders are managed.
