Rugby games will not be allowed when New Zealand goes to Alert Level 2 on Thursday.
Sport NZ has updated its guidelines to include a restriction on gatherings of more than 10 people in team sports, preventing popular winter codes such as rugby, soccer and netball from resuming at Level 2.
The restriction also applies to non-sporting events such as funerals and weddings and will be reviewed on May 25.
“We can now confirm that the 10-person gathering limit applies to all community sports, however this limit will be revised on May 25,” said a statement from Sport NZ CEO Peter Miskimmin.

Funerals, tangihanga and weddings can only have 10 people at alert level 2.
“At this point, subject to continued containment of Covid-19 by New Zealand, the limits may be increased, which could allow the entire training and competition environments to restart.
“This means that as of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, sports teams may train or play subject to the combined number of players, coaches and / or officials not exceeding 10 and that appropriate physical distance guidelines are followed.”
