A climate activism group has stopped work at a Huntly coal mine.

The Extinction Rebellion group began protesting at the Rotowaro coal mine near Huntly on Tuesday at 6.30 am.

They were also going to protest outside the Mineral Forum 2020, planned for Tuesday at the Claudelands event center in Hamilton.

Extinction Rebellion claimed a victory by closing the conference, however organizers cited security concerns about the coronavirus by canceling the forum last week.

At the Rotowaro mine, activists blocked three entrances, preventing access and interrupting work. Some protesters chained themselves to the doors.

The Rotowaro Coal Field and Open Pit is the second largest open pit coal mine in New Zealand. It is owned by Bathurst Resources Ltd. The company was one of the main supporters of the Mineral Forum 2020.
