Warm air is blanketing the country the Tuesday before Christmas, but the humid weather persists.
“It’s quite hot,” said MetService meteorologist Larissa Marintchenko.
The eastern parts of both islands are forecast to be the warmest.
On the South Island, Christchurch, Kaikōura and Ashburton will reach highs of 24 degrees Celsius. Queenstown and Wanaka will also be quite hot at 23 ° C and 25 ° C, respectively, with Alexandra expected to hit 26 ° C.

Marintchenko singled out Gisborne and Hastings as two of the warmest places on the North Island on Tuesday with highs of 27 ° C. Wellington is forecast to peak at 20 ° C and Auckland to peak at 25 ° C.
“North Northland will be quite hot,” he added.
Kaitaia is scheduled to reach 25C and Whangārei 26C.
A heavy rain alert issued by MetService for the Westland region expired at 7 am Overnight, Westport recorded 33mm of rain, a significant amount, according to Marintchenko.
“For six hours, it has rained a lot.”
Wet weather persists.
“[The] The front that is bringing this heavy rain is already moving north, “Marintchenko said.
The system is expected to clear the South Island on Tuesday afternoon and weaken as it moves over the North Island.
The rains will develop in Wellington during the morning and are expected to clear up later in the afternoon. Auckland, which is mostly cloudy, will only get a few showers during the day. There are also occasional showers in Christchurch with the possibility of showers from late afternoon to evening.
“It’s mostly in the afternoon, kind of a night, and then … the front should be clear.”
The Gisborne region is one of the few places with good weather for the day.
There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms for Westland and Buller. Marintchenko said sparks have already been seen in the Buller region.
