A young man has managed to locate his homeless father and be reunited with him more than a decade apart, all just in time for Christmas.
Liverpool’s Jason Kelly hadn’t seen his father David since he was a 12-year-old boy.
After Kelly’s parents separated, David slept on the street for many years.
For years, Kelly had wondered what would happen to her father, with a photo of him from the late 1990s as her only connection.
After making several inquiries, Kelly soon discovered that David had been living at a particular address for several years.
Despite having a variety of nerves and thoughts running through her body, on Christmas Eve Kelly took a chance and visited the address.
He knocked on the door where a woman in her 70s answered and confirmed that David lives in the house but was not at home.
Kelly was typing in her number when David returned.
The 23-year-old told the Liverpool Echo that his father, now 67, was so shocked by his son’s visit that he began to flee.
“I was screaming, ‘Dad, it’s me, Jason,'” she said.
“Over time, he began to assimilate and I caught him to walk alongside him.
“When he recognized me, he started asking about the family and was trying to remember my date of birth.
“At that moment, he didn’t want to look at me, as his eyes were filled with tears.”
The Christmas Eve miracle saw the couple reunite on Christmas Day with Kelly by bringing a plate of Christmas dinner to David’s house.
Kelly also gifted her father with a mobile phone with his number on it so the couple could keep in touch.
Now he wants to help his father financially and help him recover.
While initially concerned that his father would not want to see him, he said the search has been a miraculous result.
“It’s a real miracle,” he said.
“When he left, I thought, ‘oh god.’ It was the outcome I feared the most.
“But finding him before Christmas was absolutely amazing.
“I had that in mind and it’s a miracle that it happened.”
