The Christchurch City Council approved the conceptual designs for the new Hornby Center planned for the east side of Kyle Park.

The council is investing $ 35.7 million in the multipurpose center to meet the community and recreational needs of the growing population living in southwest Christchurch.

“The new Hornby Center will be an important asset to the community and will help close a gap in our network of community and recreational facilities throughout the city,” said Mayor Lianne Dalziel.

“The Hornby community has been pushing for many years for this type of facility, and I am delighted that we are one step closer to delivering it.”

Architectural firm Warren and Mahoney developed the conceptual designs for the 4,000-square-meter center after discussions with the community.

The facility will include a library, lane pool, learning-to-swim pool, wet play area for toddlers, whirlpool, and customer service area.

There will also be an espresso bar, creative activity room, and multipurpose rooms that community groups can use for gatherings.

A hydrotherapy pool could be included on the premises at a later date. The Greater Hornby Residents Association and Hornby Rotary are coordinating a community fundraising effort to allow one to be added.

The procurement plan will be submitted to the council’s Finance and Performance Committee on November 5 for final approval.

Construction is due to begin in mid-2021 and the center is expected to open in late 2022.
